The Elkay Filter Status Light (found on both Standard and Enhanced Bottle Filling Stations)
Understanding what each of the status lights mean.
Elkay filtered water coolers with bottle fillers have model numbers that begin with an “LZ.” And enhanced, filtered, bottle fillers also end with a "P".
The filter status portion of the display contains three different LED lights. One green, one yellow, and one red.
And while you might be inclined to treat these like you would a traffic light, in fact, these colors do not indicate the safety of the water. Rather, they describe the estimated amount of life the filter has left. Elkay states that a yellow light means that you should consider changing the filter soon (and/or order one soon to have ready).
And a red light does not necessarily indicate “bad water, stop drinking!” but rather that the filter is estimated to have reached the end of it's expected life and may not be fully effective in removing contaminents from the water supply. And though Elkay strongly recommends changing it at this point, the water dispensed should be no worse than simply drinking directly from a faucet. In addition to allowing impurities, this may also affect the taste of the water.
If you have an enhanced bottle filler, there is one more status that can be shown in the filter status area. This is the "blinking" red light. This almost always indicates that the filter is not able to be detected by the bottle filler control board. This could result from having removed the filter, or when changing the filter, having reinstalled it in a mis-aligned orientation. See our article on Troubleshooting Filter Replacement on Elkay Bottle Fillers.
Note: A blinking red light may also indicate an incompatible filter, so be sure to always use genuine Elkay WaterSentry filters with a capacity of 3000 gallons or more. See our Elkay Filters area for a great selection.
In Addition: If your Elkay bottle filler does not end with a "P", it will be necessary to reset your filter status light using the control board at the top of your bottle filling station. Directions for this can be found in the manual that came with your Elkay product, however, we've also created a Changing the Filter on an Elkay Legacy ezH2O Bottle Filler video which takes you through the whole process. There is also this excerpt from an LZS8WSLK manual which you can download and/or print out.
Lastly: If you have an Elkay Liv ezH2O In-wall bottle filling station, you may notice that the filter status lights are not the typical green/yellow/red pattern described above. For those, here is a brief explanation:
- The left-most filter life LED indicates the filter is functioning correctly and has used less than 65% capacity. A steady blue light indicates the filter is installed properly.
- When the middle blue light illuminates, the filter has 33 percent of its life remaining and will need to be changed soon. When this indicator light comes on, a replacement filter should be ordered.
- The right-most (red) light will illuminate and indicates that the filter should be changed.
- A blinking red light indicates no filter or that the filter is incorrectly installed.
- If both a red and blue light are blinking, it means that the filter wire has become disconnected. Check to make sure the cable connections are secure.
