VR Means Vandal Resistant

So far, we have talked about the general vandal-resistant features built into all of Elkay’s drinking fountains and water coolers. If you are in a high vandal-prone area, look for the specific Vandal-Resistant items that have the letters VR in the model number. The specific VR / Vandal-Resistant models are made of a high stainless steel content, including the bottle filling station and the bubbler. (The bubbler is the hooded spout that the water comes out of when drinking directly from the fountain.) Most Elkay bubblers are made of soft plastic, and Elkay calls them the Flexi-Guard® bubbler. The soft Flexi-Guard design protects the user’s mouth. In the VR model, the bubbler is all stainless steel or chrome-plated steel so that it’s tough as nails and can fend off those hooligans. VR models also come with additional louvers in the vent areas so that sharp objects like screw drivers can’t be shoved in there. Additionally, they are manually operated. The user must push a chrome button to activate either the drinking portion or the bottle filler. This way, there is no sensor to be tampered with. 

The Elkay VRC8WSK or its bi-level brother, the VRCTL8WSK are good examples of vandal-resistant drinking fountains. (Very similar to the Halsey Taylor HTHBHVR8.) These vandal-resistant models are so durable that they are also the units that are rated for outdoor use. High stainless steel content and manual operation make them well-suited to handling outdoor weather. Note that if you are installing these outdoors, the non-filtered versions, like those just listed, are the ones intended for outdoor use. Elkay discourages using filtered coolers outdoors because of the possibility of contamination in the filtration system if there is a lot of humidity or changing weather. 

Look for Elkay models with ‘VR’ in the number to ensure you’re choosing a truly vandal-resistant unit.
